2-Day Zagora Desert Trip Itinerary
Day 1: Marrakech to Zagora via Ait Benhaddou
Your adventure starts with a morning pickup from your Marrakech hotel or riad around 8:00 AM. You’ll head into the High Atlas Mountains, driving through the Tizi N’tichka pass with amazing views of mountain peaks and remote Berber villages. There will be stops for refreshments and photos to enjoy the scenery.
Next, you’ll reach Kasbah Ait Ben Haddou, a famous historical site in Morocco. This old fortified village, made of striking mud brick, has been featured in many films. You can take an optional guided tour to learn about its history, from its past as a trading stop to its cultural importance today.
After lunch, you’ll pass through the Ouarzazate region, known for its film studios. Then, the road follows the Draa Valley, a green area with palm groves that contrasts with the desert.
As the sun sets, you’ll arrive in Zagora, a rocky desert region with a unique beauty. Your day ends with a sunset camel ride, where you can enjoy the peaceful desert as the sky changes colors. The ride leads you to your overnight camp, where you’ll have a traditional Berber dinner and music around a campfire under a sky full of stars.
Day 2: Zagora passing by Ouarzazate to Marrakech
Wake up early to see the amazing desert sunrise before a big breakfast at camp. Then, you’ll ride your camel back to the edge of the Zagora Desert, where your vehicle will be waiting to take you back to Marrakech.
On the way, you’ll stop in Ouarzazate. Here, you’ll have time to explore the Taourirt Kasbah, an old palace with cool designs. Ouarzazate is often called “Africa’s Hollywood” because of its film industry. After lunch, you’ll keep driving through the beautiful High Atlas Mountains, getting back to Marrakech by early evening.
